I just read a wonderful blog post about a study that shows that Flax is just as harmful as soy, because like soy it can be an estrogen blocker. I really like flax seeds and have been using flax seeds and flax seed oils for years but as a preventative measure I am going to cut flax out. Even when eating healthy we have to use wisdom. So this week has been a roller coaster, today at 6:08am I received a message from my Aunt that my paternal grandmother died. My grandmother had been suffering with cancer for a while and though she put up a good fight she went home to be with the Lord. On one hand I take comfort in the fact that she won’t be in anymore pain but on the other hand I feel sad and frustrated, because my grandmother passed exactly 2-months to the day as my Aunt (her only daughter), at the same hospital and they had the same doctor! This doctor did not catch my Aunt’s cancer until it was stage 4. I know doctors do the best they can and we all have to die one day but on Thursday I watched a documentary Forks over Knives. The way I saw this documentary is because I was home from work (due to being exhausted after being at the hospital late the day before) and I walked into a neighborhood hair salon that also has nutrition and health programs! I asked about a hairtstlye and something told me to ask about the health information (I had passed by for months wondering about the salon with health classes) and I had a great conversation with the hairdresser who just happened to be graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (the program I just enrolled in!). She is also a spiritual woman and invited me to watch Forks Over Knives and in this documentary the American diet’s connection to cancer was discussed and I realized that the saying is true “we perish for lack of knowledge”. The documentary even addressed the role the FDA plays in promoting a unhealthy diet. From my time working for Healthcare-Now! See Part I –On Your Black World
In this second part of the series we will take a look at the role food may play in causing or aggravating fibroids. Just to review fibroids are smooth muscle cells that may grow in your uterus during childbearing years. Though fibroids are not cancer, they are still tumors and are quite common for African-American women. Many women do not realize they have them and though they can shrink after menopause they can hinder the ability to get pregnant. From What Are Fibroids
Some very common foods may contain substances that may lead to and increase growth of uterine fibroids. According to NutritionMD women who eat more than one serving of red meat a day have a 70% higher chance of developing fibroids. If you have fibroids limiting red meat will help you a great deal. The second culprit are foods and beverages that contain Methylxanthines a.k.a. coffees, teas and caffeinated sodas and chocolate that contains some caffeine. Carbs can also play a role in causing fibroids according to Dr. Christiane Northrup, cookies, breads and cakes, can alter the way that estrogen is metabolized and may increase your risk. Additionally, according to Nutrition MD eating a great deal of refined foods may also influence your weight if you do not get enough exercise because as women gain weight, their risk of fibroids increases.
And though must of us love happy hour alcohol can also play a role in causing fibroids because it is metabolized in the liver and may slow down the metabolism of estrogen, which leads to higher estrogen levels in the body, as noted by Tori Hudson, ND in the Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients Online Magazine. The longer you have been drinking the higher this risk becomes. This may sound like discouraging news, what can you actually eat and will you have to kiss happy hour goodbye? Since starting my journey to wholeness God has given me so much information in the form of books, meeting individuals and finding out about organizations such as Just Food, NYC Department of Health Office of Minority Health (which gives funding for wellness programs in churches) and now on the Sojourners Blog (a faith based advocacy group that I write for and work with for my job) Lilly Fowler writes about how Pastor Rick Warren, Author of The Purpose Driven Life is focusing on health. Though I don’t always agree with his theology he is one of the most influential pastors in the nation so he has the power to bring wellness to thousands of people. Sometimes I questions whether I am alone on this journey but then God shows me that the spirit “doesn’t work cross purposes” (as my mentor Author & Activist Lisa Sharon Harper shared with me) we are all connected and we all receive divine direction when we most need and want it.

Megachurch pastor Rick Warren has become an outsized evangelical superstar: best-selling author of The Purpose Driven Life series, pastoral mentor and even political referee.Now Warren is finding a new purpose: tackling his outsized waistline.
Warren, 58, says the revelation came about a year ago, during a marathon baptism session of about 800 people at Saddleback Church.
As he struggled to submerge members of his flock in the baptismal pool one by one, he realized his parishioners were heavy and that he, too, was fat, setting a terrible example.
Warren says his gradual weight gain — about two to three pounds a year — has added up over his 30 years as a pastor. To lose the extra pounds and inspire others to do the same, the former football player enlisted the help of three doctors.
Warren recruited a family physician, Dr. Mark Hyman; Dr. Mehmet Oz, New York Times best-selling author and host of NBC’s The Dr. Oz Show; and Dr. Daniel Amen, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, and the lone professing Christian in the mix.
Together they launched “The Daniel Plan: God’s Prescription for Your Health,” named after a passage in the biblical Book of Daniel where the prophet and fellow Israelites refuse to accept “royal” food and wine from the Babylonian king, opting for water and simple vegetables instead.
Wholeness4Love is about my journey to physical, spiritually and emotional wholeness one step at a time. I started Wholistic Health Coaching in November and have been making small changes but now I want to step-up and do more to improve my health. For many years I struggled with PMDD(Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), systematic hypoglycemia, and stress related illnesses which resulted in me having a seizure while waiting to have dinner with my best friend in October 2009. The months following my seizure I had health problems that doctors could not diagnose and one day while sitting in class my hand started to shake, the doctors even suspected that I might have lupus and I decided to extend my graduate program to take a lighter load so that I could slow down. My health has improved but is still not where I would like it to be. Through Holistic Health coaching with Nicole Founder of Enlightened Table I learned the some of the foods I had been eating as well as the hair and skin products I used were aggravating my PMDD and stress. I also learned that many of my health issues were connected to emotional and creative expression issues that I had been ignoring or silently carrying around. The great thing about Holistic Health Coaching is that the spirit, soul and body of the person is taken into account and your plan of action is tailored to you. I have discovered many resources that are great supports for the changes I want to make and I would like to share this information with you. I want to invite you on my journey, though I usually blog about politics and stay away from blogging about my personal issues as a Womanist I have come to see that the personal is political (for instance due to Food Deserts in low-income communities many end up eating unhealthy diets). I have gained so much thus far such as the ability to make my own perfume from essential oils, learning how to make all types of greens (including collards-yes they are VERY healthy for you!) and a clearer view of my vocation.
